Late Cane Cutters' Rally Falls Just Short in Opener

05/30/2013 11:47 PM -

In an evening to remember, the Cane Cutters' late inning couldn't cap a perfect night as they fall to the Brazos Valley Bombers on Opening Night in a 17-12 barn burner

Opening Night served by Sonic Drive-In was an evening to remember as fans were treated to a special game ball delivery by a remote control airplane from Big Boy Toys, followed by the Sonic tater tot, who brought the cheese, for the ceremonial first pitch. Fans were also treated to multiple giveaways, snow cones, and soft-serve ice cream throughout the evening.

It was a slow start for the Cane Cutters’ staff as nine Bombers were issued free passes over the first two innings. The opening night jitters were apparent, as the strike zone seemed to shrink smaller and smaller. In it all, the Cutters fell behind early, as they faced a 7-0 deficit heading into the third. Acadiana fell behind 9-2 going into the sixth, but then began to chip away.

The bats came alive for the Cane Cutters in the bottom of the sixth scoring nine runs, highlighted by a Blake Brom three-run homerun to left field, closing the Bomber lead to just one. The resurgent Cane Cutters’ offense forced the Bombers to look to their bullpen. In the top of the eighth inning with the Bomber lead still at one, the Acadiana bullpen struggled to keep the momentum. The Bombers doubled to deep right, clearing the bases, increasing their lead to five by the score of 17-12. A slight delay occurring because of a discrepancy of mound visits led to a late pitching change for the Cane Cutters, bringing in sophomore Ryan Deems. Acadiana could not reboot a rally, as the game would finish a 17-12 Bombers win.

Looking forward, tomorrow night will be an action packed evening for all Cane Cutters’ fans as the C&G Boats Firework Friday tradition starts up for 2013. After tomorrow’s game, the second of a two-game set with the Bombers, fans are invited to Buffalo Wild Wings on Ambassador to eat dinner, get autographs, and hang out with this year’s Cane Cutters’ squad.
