Cane Cutters defeat Victoria Generals 9-6

06/10/2016 11:00 PM -

Although it took the Cane Cutters some time to get things going on offense, the team improved to 8-2 on the season with a win against the Victoria Generals at home on Friday.

The Cane Cutters will continue play tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in the second half of a two-game series against the Generals.

After being down 5-1 after the top of the fifth inning, the Cane Cutters responded with five runs to jump up 6-5.

“We just had to get our guys going a little bit,” said Cane Cutters head coach Austin Flores. “We had a long four-game road trip. We had a long bus trip last night. It took a little while to get going, so I just had to tell them to focus back up and make sure we’re locked into each pitch and start winning some pitches, and they did a nice job responding.”

The Cane Cutters were able to extend their lead with three runs at the bottom of the eighth. The team was three outs from a victory.

With two outs and a 9-6 Cane Cutters, the Generals had bases loaded with Levi Zents of Weatherford College as the go-ahead batter. The Cane Cutters pitcher Kaleb Roper of Arizona was three outs from helping the Cane Cutters jump to eight wins on the season.

Two balls and two strikes was the count, when Zents swung and missed to end the game 6-9.

Trenton Buchhorn, from the University of Texas at Tyler, put together another productive game with two hits on four at-bats.

In Flores’ first season with the team, an 8-2 record is a pretty good start..

“Like I told the guys earlier in the year,” Flores said. “Just take care of their stuff individually and our team will have success, and that’s what the team’s done so far.”
