Cane Cutters Keep it Close but Come up Short

07/16/2013 7:53 PM -

Fabacher Field was buzzing Tuesday night when the nationally ranked Brazos Valley Bombers rolled into town for a matchup between the Texas Collegiate League's two best teams.

After chasing off the rain showers earlier in the day, the top two teams in the 2013 Texas Collegiate League took the field in a marquee midseason matchup. Although trailing the nationally touted Brazos Valley Bombers in the overall standings, the Cutters have bested the Bombers in this season’s second half of play coming into tonight.

Both teams kept the game close tonight through the first seven innings. Pitchers Jake Winston and Jason Gareri held both sides scoreless until Brazos Valley designated hitter Hunter Melton came through with his 3rd home run on the season, a solo shot that broke the tie and made the score 1-0. Winston would pitch around the homer in the next inning before running into trouble in the ninth after getting the first two outs relatively quickly. Following a two-out single, Winston was taken out of the game in favor of Merrick Ardoin. Winston’s night would conclude with 8 2/3 innings pitched, giving up 3 runs on 6 hits while striking out 5 batters. Bombers’ pitcher Jason Gareri finished the night with the win, going 7 innings and giving up just 5 hits and 2 walks. The Cane Cutters were able to threaten with 2 outs in multiple innings, but Gareri was able to pitch his way out of jams all night. Aside from Winston’s outing, the Cane Cutters also got a solid performance at the plate from third baseman Chance Vincent who went 2-for-4 on the night, leading Acadiana in hits.

Fabacher Field will play host to Lafayette’s own performing sensation MacKenzie Bourg tomorrow night, before game two on the series versus the visiting Brazos Valley Bombers. The star of NBC’s The Voice will play a special Coke Wednesday set, live and in-concert, beginning right after the gates open at 6:00 PM! Don’t miss an extraordinary chance to catch great music and top-notch collegiate summer baseball tomorrow night at Fabacher Field. Coke Wednesday also means that kids get in FREE when they bring an empty Coca-Cola can or bottle.
