Lafayette, La.- After last year’s success, it will be difficult to repeat winning the Texas Collegiate Title. However, never count out the Acadiana Cane Cutters. This year’s team possesses multiple returning pitchers and a couple sluggers.

John Gray, a redshirt freshman at Arkansas Tech and returning 2022 pitcher of the year, played a large role in bringing home a championship. He led the team in multiple pitching categories. Gray played in 17 games while firing 70 strikeouts with 50 innings pitched. He also finished the season with a solid 1.98 ERA and a record of 5-1.

Another key returning piece is Matt Abshire. Abshire is a sophomore catcher who recently transferred from Pensacola State to the University of Louisiana-Monroe. He was second in at-bats with 138 and played in the second most games with 37. The Cane Cutters sport a second returning catcher as well. Landon Mason, a sophomore at Nunez, played in 19 games last season with a .242 batting average.

The lone returning fielder is Christian Garcia. He plays outfield or first base and is a sophomore at the University of Western Kentucky. Garcia played outfield for the Cane Cutters in 2022 and finished with the third best batting average on the team, .432.

Junior Jackson Sioson, freshman Julian Garcia and freshman Brandon Carter round out the rest of the returning bullpen. Sioson plays for Southeastern Oklahoma; Garcia attends the University of Houston-Victoria and Carter is studying at Bossier Parish Community College. Sioson played in 16 games last season with 18.1 innings pitched and finished with a 1-2 record. Garcia started three games with 16.2 innings pitched and was credited with one win. Carter pitched in nine games while firing 11.1 innings with double digit strikeouts.

This year’s team will surely be just as special as last year’s, and we are extremely excited to welcome plenty of new, eager faces to Fabacher field.
