Cane Cutters add Catcher, Strengthen Bullpen

04/24/2013 2:48 PM -

Acadiana continues to make key moves to fortify the 2013 roster.

The Cane Cutters are getting close to filling their entire Opening Night roster for the 2013 Texas Collegiate League Baseball season. On Wednesday morning, Head Coach Lonny Landry made three more mores to bolster the catching position and the Cane’s bullpen. Northwestern State and Louisiana natives Vaughn Shapen, Dillon Crain, and New Mexico Lobo Victor Sanchez look to help Acadiana capture their first-ever TCL Championship this summer.

Northwestern State freshman catcher Vaughn Shapen, of Shreveport, is eager for this summer to arrive. While in high school at Loyola College Prep last spring, the backstop played tremendously. Shapen finished with an astounding .470 batting average and captured All-State honors his senior year. In addition to his gaudy average, Shapen also holds the all-time school record for base knocks, and is the proud owner of a 34 game hitting streak.

Dillon Crain, a freshman right-hander from Converse, Louisiana, has already gotten a taste of college baseball action for Northwestern State this spring. In five appearances for the Demons, Crain has pitched 7.1 frames, and has tallied 5 strikeouts. As a senior at Converse High School, Crain was named the 2012 Louisiana Pitcher of the Year and earned a Louisville Slugger All-American honor. Dillon concluded last season with a stifling 1.03 ERA from the bump, with an phenomenal 203 opposing batters dismissed on strikes.

Redshirt freshman Victor Sanchez also plans to come out of the bullpen for the Cutters in 2013. The 6’1”, 190-pound righty from Albuquerque attended Volcano Vista High and makes his home pitching for the University of New Mexico Lobos. With this season well underway, he has made 8 appearances and worked in 7.2 innings. During that time, Sanchez has earned a 1-0 record, while sitting down nearly a batter per frame on strikes. Sanchez has showed much maturity and dependability as a redshirt freshman during the first half of the season and has come in to give the Lobos the edge they need in close contests.
