Homegrown Talent Joins Acadiana

06/20/2017 11:45 AM -

The Cane Cutters have signed ULL catcher Handsome Monica and Mississippi State pitcher Hayden Marze, both of whom have strong local ties.

Monica grew up in Mandeville, Louisiana and was the #3 high school prospect out of the state in his senior year at St. Paul before signing with the University of Arizona. After playing a limited role at Arizona, he spent a year at Northwest Florida State, where he performed well enough to be drafted in the 33rd round of the 2016 MLB Amateur Player Draft before deciding to return to school and play for the Ragin’ Cajuns.

Marze attended high school in Opelousas, Louisiana before attending LSU-Eunice for two seasons, where he struck out 109 batters in 78 innings and contributing to the LSU-E team that captured an NJCAA World Series title. His success at LSU-E earned him the #26 spot on Perfect Game’s list of top junior college prospects and although many scouts believe he would be selected within the first 20 rounds of the MLB draft, he elected to join Mississippi State for his junior year. Montz noted that “It’s always exciting when you’re able to work closely with an SEC talent, especially someone like Hayden who has had postseason success and knows how to perform under pressure.”

Monica and Marze joined the rest of the Cane Cutters on Monday for their 4-3 walkoff win in their first game back from a two game road trip.
