Come Back Falls Short

07/13/2015 5:53 AM -

The Cane Cutters looked to avenge their 7-3 loss to the Texas Marshals in the first game of the series but came up just short in a heart breaker.

Hunter Medine took the mound first for the Cane Cutters, giving up a walk to Logan Sepenak to lead off. Sepenak stole 2nd and then scored on a David Fry single. Fry later scored as well, putting the Marshals up 2 runs in just the first inning.

In the bottom of the second, Jerame Littell hit a double and scored off a Parker Jones single to expand the Marshals lead, 3-0.

With the Cane Cutters still scoreless in the bottom of the 4th, the Marshals continued to add to their score. Medine gave up his fourth walk of the night to Jones, who scored on a Fry double. Marshals led 4-0.

The Cane Cutters finally got on the board in the 6th inning when Leiff Clarkson got his bat going with a base hit, followed by a Zak Kutsulis single. Clarkson got to 3rd thanks to an error by the center fielder, and then Bridges threw a wild pitch that got Kutsulis to 2nd and Clarkson in to score. Kutsulis would also score in the 6th, and the Cane Cutters left the 6th inning within 2 runs, 4-2.

The Cane Cutters had a strong rally in the 7th that started when Alex Tucker advanced to first off a dropped 3rd strike, then Connor Short walked. Clarkson hit a single to load up the bases and Kutsulis walked Tucker in to score. Cummings then came to bat and ripped a 2 RBI double, giving the Cane Cutters their first lead of the night and bringing to score to 5-4.

After giving up 3 walks and 3 runs in one inning, Landon Holifield came in to relieve Bridges on the mound for the Marshals.

But the Cane Cutters kept the scoring party going thanks to a Chance Vincent hit, ending the 7th inning with a 7-4 lead.

The score held until the bottom of the 9th when the Marshals started a rally of their own and turned the game into a nail-biter. Fry ripped a 2-run homer off a Clay Brast pitch to bring the Marshals within 1.

Joey Cresta came in to relieve Brast, but things did not get better for the Acadiana boys. Cresta gave up a single, hit the next batter with a pitch, then both runners gained an extra base off a pass ball. Mitchell Andrews hit a single that brought in Zach Hardy to tie it up. Ben Brookover then scored on an outfielder error, giving the Marshals the final lead, 8-7.

Hunter Spielman gets the win for the Marshals, and Cresta is handed the loss for the Cane Cutters. The Cane Cutters move to 19-14 on the season.
