A Win's a Win!

06/06/2015 7:27 AM -

After a long week on the road, the Cane Cutters ended the trip on a thrilling high note against the East Texas Pump Jacks.

The Pump Jacks’ starting pitcher Mike Crimi struggled early, hitting the leadoff batter Jacob Seward with a pitch. The Cane Cutters then came out with their bats blazing, getting 5 hits in a row.

With the bases loaded, Adam Yacek hit a 2 run single, bringing Seward and Braedon Barrett across home plate and giving the Cane Cutters an early 2-0 lead.

Taylor Braley scored next on a James Ziegler RBI single, and the Canes left the 1st inning up 3 runs.

Daniel Martinez started on the mound for the Cane Cutters, allowing 6 hits while striking out 4 batters. The Pump Jacks only scored 1 run on his watch without a single walk.

Hunter Owens scored the first run for the Pump Jacks off a Joey Libby single, which would be the Pump Jacks only score until the 8th inning.

Cane Cutters loaded the bases at the top of the 3rd, and a Cameron Cummings walk sent Ziegler home. With Daniel Keating at 3rd, Leiff Clarkson brought him home with a single. But the Cane Cutters weren’t done with the inning just yet. With Kyle Knaulth at 3rd, Seward hit a sacrifice fly to put the Canes up 6-1.

Neither team added a run until the 5th, when Ziegler hit a single and would later score on a wild pitch.

In the top of the 7th, Daniel Keating hit a monster triple and was later hit home by Knaulth.

After a stellar 7 innings pitched, Dane Lovejoy replaced Martinez in the 8th, allowing the Pump Jacks 1 run and bring the score to 8-2.

Clay Brast relieved Lovejoy in the 9th inning and Tristan Clarke reached first on a walk. Joey Libby hit a fly out to right and Alex Bell struck out swinging. With 2 outs, it looked like the Cane Cutters had the win all but wrapped up.

But the Pump Jacks would rally back and make the game too close for comfort for the Cane Cutters. Dilon Argo hit a single, and T.J. Friedl walked. With the bases loaded, Niko Buentello hit a clutch double that brought 2 runs home.

Alec Sanchez then came in for Brast and gave up a Jake Nash single, moving Buentello to 3rd. The bases loaded up again with another walk, and Buentello then walked home. With the bases still loaded and the tying run on 3rd, the Cane Cutter’s Ziegler made the play of the game gunning a Clarke hit home for the 3rd and final out of the game, allowing the Cane Cutters to escape with the 1-run victory.

Martinez gets the win and Sanchez the save for the Cane Cutters. Crimi receives the loss.
