POWERADE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

07/29/2014 11:31 AM -

The Acadiana Cane Cutters finished the 6 game series 4-2 and are now 11-8 on the second half of the season.  The team is 25-21 on the season and still has a very good chance at making the post season.  The team started the 6 game series against the Victoria Generals where Acadiana’s pitching was too much for the Generals.  New addition Marc Frazier (Nicholls State) got the win for Acadiana while Alec Sanchez (Texas State) got the save.  Game two of the series against the Generals ended in a 6-3 loss by the Cane Cutters before the team headed to Brazos Valley for a two game series against the Bombers.  The Cane Cutters made their debut on ESPN Sports Center Top 10 after a crazy triple play by the Bombers, but Acadiana’s pitching was too much for the Bombers as the Cane Cutters came out on top defeating the Bombers 2-0.  The Bombers came back the next night to shut out the Cane Cutters in a 7-0 victory in the last game of the series.  Acadiana returned to Fabacher Field Saturday night for the biggest night of the season.  It was Lyle Mouton Bobble Head Night, Star Trek Night, and Bike Night.  The team started off the night losing 15-0 against the Lafayette Little League Challengers team, but would hold off a 3-2 victory over the Woodlands Strykers in game one of the weekend series.   The next night would be close game, but Acadiana sealed the victory in the bottom of the 9th inning after Connor Barron (Southern Miss) hit a triple and scored after a wild pitch to Cameron Dishon (Ole Miss).

Scott Ashford from Ole Miss has been awarded the honor of the Powerade Pitcher of the Week for the first time this season. Ashford was the hero of game one of the series against the Woodlands Strykers on Saturday as he was called upon with the bases loaded in the 9th inning without allowing a hit or a run and got the save for Acadiana. Although he gave up the tying run in the top of the 9th, Ashford got the win on Sunday against the Strykers after coming in to relieve Colton Lee (Pearl River Junior College).  On the season, Ashford has pitched 16.1 innings allowing 11 hits, 10 runs, 20 strike outs and has recorded 2 wins and 7 saves for the Cane Cutters.

For the fourth time this season, the Powerade Player of the Week was awarded to Connor Barron from Southern Mississippi Mississippi.  Barron played in 4 of the Cane Cutters last 6 games and went 4-13 and recorded a .308 batting average.  Barron has been a top player for the Cane Cutters since the season started and it seems as though he just keeps getting better.  Barron leads the team with 53 hits, 8 doubles, and 36 runs.  He also leads the team 27 stolen bases on the season.  In the last 6 games, Barron recorded 5 runs, 1 triple and 6 stolen bases.  He finished the 6 game series with a .471 OBP and a .462 slugging average.

The Cane Cutters will travel to the Woodlands Texas to take on the Strykers on Tuesday and Wednesday before returning to Fabacher Field Thursday and Friday for a two game home series against the Texas Marshals. Thursday is Superhero Night at Fabacher Field in support of our local firemen, policemen, and EMT personnel.  The Cane Cutters will hold their LSU Night on Friday in which fans can win a prize for being the most spirited LSU fan.

Coach Lonny Landry and the Acadiana Cane Cutters will be hosting the Haddock Baseball Camp for youth ages 6-14 on Thursday, July 31st and Friday, August 1st.  For more information, go to www.canecuttersbaseball.com/community/baseball
