CANE CUTTERS’ LATE RALLY NOT ENOUGH IN LOSS TO BOMBERS

07/20/2014 9:24 PM -

The Acadiana Cane Cutters’ weekend road trip drew to a close this evening in a 5-3 loss to the Brazos Valley Bombers.

The offense of the Cane Cutters struggled to find the groove early against Brazos Valley starting pitcher Tyler Nurdin, whose only run allowed came in his sixth and final inning on the mound.

Acadiana would put together a ninth inning rally, however, to make for an exciting finish. Trailing 5-1, Taylor Walker (Jackson State Community College) would lead the inning off with a single and Trent Giambrone (Jones County Community College) would follow with a walk. A one-out Trey Hicks (Texas State) single would score Walker from second base and advance Giambrone to third base. With two outs, Connor Barron (Southern Mississippi) would draw a bases-loaded walk to score Giambrone to pull within two runs. Unfortunately, that is all the Cane Cutters could manage as Chance Vincent (University of Alabama) would fly out to right field with the tying runner on second base.

Cody Coll (Naperville, Illinois) started on the mound this evening for Acadiana, going four and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs, and striking out two batters. Scott Szush (Southeastern Louisiana) would be called on in relief, giving up a run in his two and one-third innings pitched. Southpaw Scott Ashford (Ole Miss) would be the last pitcher out of the bullpen tonight, pitching a scoreless inning while retiring two batters on strikes.

The Bombers spaced runs throughout the ballgame, scoring once in the 2nd inning, twice in the 3rd inning, once in the 5th inning, and one last run of insurance in the 6th inning. Horacio Correa III was the star of the night for the Bombers offensively, going 3 for 5 at the plate with 3 RBIs, including a 2-run homerun.

Acadiana will return home on Tuesday, July 22nd, against the Victoria Generals for Ladies Night where there will be raffle prizes and a t-shirt giveaway. The two-game home series against the Generals will conclude on Wednesday.
