07/04/2014 10:48 AM -

The Cane Cutters started their road trip off by defeating the Texas Marshals by a score of 4-2. Jake Winston (Southern Mississippi) got the start on the mound for Acadiana and turned in a brilliant performance, delivering 8 innings and allowing only 2 Marshal runs. James Ziegler (Chandler-Gilbert Community College) and Alex Tucker (Nicholls State) provided the spark offensively, driving in two runs and one run respectively.

Acadiana struck first after Connor Barron (Southern Mississippi) led the game off with a triple and scored on a wild pitch. The Marshals bounced right back with a score of their own in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game. James Ziegler grabbed the lead for the Cane Cutters, driving in Trey Hicks (Texas State) from 2nd base on a single. Ziegler would pick up his second RBI of the game in the top of the 6thinning, driving in Taylor Walker (Jackson State Community College) with a double. The fourth and final run for the Cane Cutters would come in the top of the 8th inning when Hicks scored again on an Alex Tucker groundout. The Marshals would score once in the bottom of the 8thinning, but that was all that they could manage.

Winston picked up his 2nd win of the season, and struck out 5 batters. Scott Ashford registered his 6th save of the season, after dealing a scoreless 9th inning.
