CANE CUTTERS KICK ROAD TRIP OFF WITH DOUBLE HEADER SWEEP

06/12/2014 10:44 AM -

The Acadiana Cane Cutters picked up a pair of wins this evening beating the Texas Marshals in both games of a double header.

Game one was a pitchers’ duel between Cane Cutters’ Nick Johnson (Southern Mississippi) and Marshal’s Austin Hilton, with the Cane Cutters coming out on top 1-0. Johnson provided 6 strong innings of scoreless baseball, striking out 5 batters and scattering 5 hits. Alec Sanchez (Texas State University) pitched a scoreless 7th inning in relief to pick up the save. Johnson picked up his second win and Sanchez tallied his second save of the season.

The game’s offensive hero was first baseman Taylor Walker (Jackson State Community College) as the lone run of the game came on his solo homerun in the top of the 1st inning. Walker added a single in his third at bat and went 2-3 at the plate.

The Cane Cutters fell behind early in game two of the double header when Texas scored one in the bottom half of the 2nd inning, but Acadiana responded in the top of the 3rd with back-to-back RBI singles from Trent Giambrone (Jones County Community College) and Hunter Wood (Western Kentucky), to take the 2-1 lead. Lucas Quary (McNeese State) added an insurance run in the top of the 6th inning when he drilled a homerun to left field, but the Marshals scored a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning to stay within a run. Wood hit another RBI single in the top of the 7th inning, extending the lead to 4-2, and game two drew to a close after the Marshals went scoreless in the bottom of the 7th

Jesse Stallings (Louisiana State University) earned his first win of the season after pitching 4 innings without allowing a run. He also added two strikeouts. Scott Ashford (Ole Miss) picked up his second save after delivering a scoreless 7th inning.
