CANE CUTTERS MAKE SERIES OF ROSTER MOVES

05/27/2014 10:15 AM -

The Acadiana Cane Cutters of the Texas Collegiate League, who open their season on Thursday, have made several roster moves today. The transactions were highlighted by a pair of University of Southern Mississippi players who starred for the Cane Cutters last year: infielder Connor Barron and pitcher Jake Winston, announcing they will return. The team also signed another player from USM; right handed pitcher Nick Johnson, along with McNeese State outfielder Lucas Quary and a pair of players from Pearl River Community College: right-handed pitcher Colton Lee and Outfielder Jalen Haskin.

Barron, a junior from Hattiesburg, MS hit .253 with 26 RBI’s for the Cane Cutters last year. He batted .246 for the Golden Eagles and had 20 RBI’s this past season. Winston, a sophomore from Vidalia, LA, went 7-2 with a 2.11 ERA for the Cane Cutters in 2013. He followed that up by going 3-3 for Southern Miss this past spring.

“It is great to get these guys back,” Cane Cutters coach Lonny Landry said. “They were fan favorites and they both had great years. It is great to see kids have success here, return to school and have good seasons there, and then get to see them again. We are really excited about that.”

Johnson, a right handed sophomore pitcher from Ridgeland, MS appeared in 13 games for the Golden Eagles. Quary, a junior from Mt. Pleasant, TX hit .283 with 28 RBI’s for the Cowboys this college season. Lee is a sophomore from Picayune, MS and Haskin is a freshman outfielder from Hattiesburg, MS.

The Cane Cutters will open their fourth season on Thursday, May 29th when they host the Brazos Valley Bombers at Fabacher Field in what will be the first part of an “Opening Weekend.” The home opening game is scheduled to include a rendition of the National Anthem sung by “Mrs. Acadiana,” Heather Hebert and the Cane Cutters first “Thirsty Thursday” of the year. The next day, May 30, will feature a C&G Boats “Fireworks Friday” postgame show.  Last year, the bombers went 49-15 in capturing the mythical National Championship and #1 ranking in all of summer collegiate baseball by Perfect Game. The Cane Cutters and Bombers are part of the six-team Texas Collegiate League that features some of the Nation’s top college prospects. Season tickets are now available. Call(337) 451-6582.
