‘REBELS’ AND LOCAL PLAYER SET TO JOIN CANE CUTTERS

05/19/2014 10:53 AM -

The Acadiana Cane Cutters of the Texas Collegiate League, who open their season on May 29th, have taken another step in finalizing their roster, coach Lonny Landry announced today. A pair of Ole Miss players; junior catcher Austin Knight and left-handed pitcher Scott Ashford have committed on Acadiana along with former Loreauville star and current University of Arizona left-handed, freshman pitcher Evan Hebert.

Knight, from Hattiesburg, MS, has appeared in 18 games for the Rebels, and has a batting average of .357 with a 1.000 fielding percentage. Ashford, a 6’4” junior from Catholic High School in Baton Rouge has appeared in three games for 11th ranked Ole Miss without giving up an earned run. He came to the Rebels by way of Pearl River Community College where he had a 2.77 ERA in 2012.

“We were delighted when we found out they were coming here,” Landry said. “Not only do they play for one of the top programs in the country, but they are also veterans. With as much as we will be around each other this summer, I can’t emphasize how important team chemistry is. These two will be there for the younger guys to lean on.”

Landry is also excited to acquire Hebert, who currently has a 2.25 ERA in five outings for the Wildcats. At Loreauville, he was 9-2 with a 1.94 ERA his senior year and was named the 2013 “Player of the Year” by the Louisiana Sportswriters Association.

“We really like him,” Landry said. “He had a fantastic high school career (both at Loreauville and Catholic High School in New Iberia, where he played his sophomore and junior seasons) and we are ecstatic he will be coming home this summer, where we hope to help in his development.”

The Cane Cutters will open their fourth season on Thursday, May 29th when they host the Brazos Valley Bombers at Fabacher Field in what will be the first part of an “Opening Weekend.” The home opening game is scheduled to include a rendition of the National Anthem sung by “Mrs. Acadiana,” Heather Hebert and the Cane Cutters first “Thirsty Thursday” of the year. The next day, May 30, will feature a C&G Boats “Fireworks Friday” postgame show.  Last year, the bombers went 49-15 in capturing the mythical National Championship and #1 ranking in all of summer collegiate baseball by Perfect Game. The Cane Cutters and Bombers are part of the six-team Texas Collegiate League that features some of the Nation’s top college prospects. Season tickets are now available. Call (337) 451-6582.
