Tough Stretch Continues As Cane Cutters Drop Series against East Texas
The Cane Cutters could not pull out a win in their two-game series against the East Texas Pump Jacks Thursday and Friday, dropping their record to 1-5 on the young season.
The series started on Tuesday with a 5-4 loss after the Cane Cutters lead by as much as 3-0 going into the bottom of the 6th inning. The Cane Cutters’ batters came out of the gate swinging well, plating two runs on a Brett Thornell single in the second inning off of Pump Jacks’ starting pitcher Colter Bostick of St. Mary’s University, quickly making the score 2-0. Scoring would continue in the 4th when Connor Barron hit into a groundout to second base, scoring catcher Vaughn Shapen and pulling further ahead, 3-0 in Bostick’s last inning of work for the game. Cane Cutters’ pitcher Kyle Cedotal breezed through five fantastic innings, giving up no runs on four hits and one walk, before giving up a run in each of the 6th and 7th innings on RBI hits, his last two innings of the game and making the score 3-2. After Cedotal’s exit, Freddie Prince scored the Cane Cutters’ 4th run of the game during the top of the 8th inning on a wild pitch from Pump Jacks’ reliever, and eventual game winner, Jake Beam, making the score 4-2. The fourth run would not be enough however, as the Pump Jacks came out hot in the bottom of the 8th, scoring three runs on Cane Cutters’ relief pitcher Reno Dupuis, stunning the team, and effectively winning the game for the Pump Jacks. J.J. Robinson was in the middle of the action during the Pump Jacks’ 8th, driving in a run on an RBI single, and scoring on a stolen base attempt as catcher Vaughn Shapen threw the ball into left field, and pushing the score to 5-4, and giving the Pump Jacks their first lead of the game. The Cane Cutters were unable to put a runner on base in the top of the 9th against Pump Jacks’ closer Dillon Moritz, making the 5-4 score final, and pushing the Cane Cutters record to 1-4 on the season.
Wednesday, June 5th would again prove to be another disappointing day for Cane Cutter nation. Starting pitcher Kaleb Fontenot gave up three runs in the first inning, none of which were earned, and the Pump Jacks never looked back on their way to 7-5 win against the Cane Cutters, and a two-game series sweep as the Cane Cutters added another tally to the loss column on the season. Though Fontenot did not pitch all that badly, he did not get much help behind him from his fielders, as four of them committed errors during the game. Fontenot pitched four innings overall, giving up 4 unearned runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out two batters and throwing four wild pitches in the process. The Cane Cutters did not stop fighting, however, and scratched two runs across in the 3rd inning on an error and an RBI single from Cane Cutters’ first baseman Mike Parker, cutting the Pump Jacks’ lead to 3-2. The Pump Jacks scored a run in the 4th and two more times in the 6th on a sacrifice fly and two-run home run, respectively, to make the score 6-2. Kyle Cedotal’s 2-run triple off of Pump Jacks’ pitcher Billy Davidson in the top of the 7th inning would make the score 6-4, as it kept the Cane Cutters close for a possible late inning rally for the win. Sadly, it would not be enough, as Pump Jacks’ relief pitcher Jordan Price held off a late score and would eventually close the game for East Texas at a final score of 7-5 for their third win of the season.
The Cane Cutters will now travel to Bryan, Texas to rematch the Brazos Valley Bombers starting on Thursday, June 6th, hoping to return the favor of Brazos’ sweep here in Acadiana, and evening the series their matchup record at 2-2. The Cane Cutters will play in Bryan on Thursday and Friday, June 7th, before returning to Fabacher Field to face the East Texas Pump Jacks for a two-game series on Saturday and Sunday, June 8th and 9th.
